A Delightful Discovery

Ever since I discovered the praying mantis last year, I've been hoping that my garden would have more. Well this morning, I found one! He/she is not very big, a little more than an inch. Last year's was on the east side of my house and hung out on the Russian Sage. This one is in the backyard under my kitchen window on my hydrangea. This afternoon it was gone but I am keeping my eye open and hoping I discover more. Wishing you great discovery and a fabulous 4th of July!

  1. The little critters are so fun this time of year! Keep watching. I put out a ladybug habitat and am hoping they will lay eggs and make my garden their very own.

  2. I like to see Lady Bugs, as that means they are eating aphids. I love my backyard wildlife. Here in Houston, we have very small green frogs with loud voices -- with their legs tucked in, they are no bigger than a half dollar. I have had at least one little frog singing away outside the past week.

I don't like spiders, but if they build a web out in the backyard, I will go out of my way to leave it alone. I sometimes get tiny "jumping spiders" in the house and try to get them onto a piece of paper so I can put them outside before the cats kill them.

I have the type of Geckos that live in Houston (they don't look like the dude in the car insurance TV commercial) and I have some that hang out in my garage and some of them hang in the storage shed in the backyard.

I often find toads early in the spring when cleaning up the garden areas in the back. I always apologize and find another area to work. Toads are good to have in your garden areas.
