Creativity Assignment 8: When is a Quilt Not a Quilt

“If you shoot at mimes, should you use a silencer?” Stephen Wright

“It’s all about the process for me now.”  Bruce Willis

Assignment #8 – When is a Quilt Not a Quilt?

Use “found” or everyday objects to make a quilt. Think outside the box ,but close to home (no shopping). How about objects/materials you recycle? What makes a quilt a quilt? And who defines it? (This time you do!)
Remember to have fun!

Suggested Reading: The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle” by Steven Pressfield (This book uses “she” not “he” which is interesting to read.)

Book's description:
A succinct, engaging, and practical guide for succeeding in any creative sphere, The War of Art is nothing less than Sun-Tzu for the soul. What keeps so many of us from doing what we long to do? Why is there a naysayer within? How can we avoid the roadblocks of any creative endeavor—be it starting up a dream business venture, writing a novel, or painting a masterpiece? Bestselling novelist Steven Pressfield identifies the enemy that every one of us must face, outlines a battle plan to conquer this internal foe, then pinpoints just how to achieve the greatest success. The War of Art emphasizes the resolve needed to recognize and overcome the obstacles of ambition and then effectively shows how to reach the highest level of creative discipline. Think of it as tough love . . . for yourself. Whether an artist, writer or business person, this simple, personal, and no-nonsense book will inspire you to seize the potential of your life.

Creativity Lesson 7: Torn Landscape

Maybe at the root we are coils of possibility in constant rotation.  -Thomas Moore

When we walk to the edge of all the light we have and take the step into the darknessof the unknown, we must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for us to stand on or we will be taught to fly.  -Patrick Overton

Assignment #7 – Torn Landscape

In this assignment, “landscape” is used in the loosest terms. Remember the idea is to explore, play and be open. We will tear fabric instead of using a rotary cutter. I also recommend that you do this as quilt-as-you-go (all three layers sewn at once.) Cut your background and batting at least two inches bigger than you want your finished size (nothing smaller than 18” by 24” is recommended). You may also have a top fabric if you like.

Inning:  Instead of an outing, time to go inward. Identify one belief that you had when you began this journey and no longer have. I would love to know what it is if you are willing to share.

My youngest son is beginning a new career in woodworking. One of the things that he is creating is signs that are different words- eat, laugh, create, dream, etc.. He gave me "create" for Christmas and I have not had the time to paint it. He is painting the ones that he is selling solid colors which he knew would not work for me. Anyway, I finally took some time to paint mine. He's happy with it and I love that this now hangs in my studio and it seemed perfect to share today. Happy creating!

Creativity Lesson 6- Spirit Dolls

-->
“Art does not reproduce what we see. It makes us see.” Paul Klee

“Life is without meaning, we bring meaning to it.” Joseph Campbell

Making cloth dolls has always been a fun and different way to play with fiber. If you've never made a cloth doll, now is the time to start! Keep it simple. Have fun!

Assignment #6 – Spirit Doll

In this assignment, we will make “spirit” dolls.  Does your doll have wild hair? Colorful clothes? A special name? Remember to have fun and have her reflect your spirit (could it be your secret one?)! Is she made of paper or cloth?

If you would like a simple pattern for a doll, just email me and I'll send one along. Just note, it doesn't have a face which you have to provide.

Happy creating!

On a more personal note. Today I learned that my friend Jan Hawley died in her sleep on January 17. It was such a shock. I remember when there were three of us on the Alliance for American Quilts board who celebrated a milestone birthday (50th) together in Louisville, Kentucky. Pat recently and unexpectedly lost her husband. Makes me pause and count my blessings. It also reminds me that life is short and unexpected things can happen so I have to make the most of it. Join me in celebrating all the good things in life.
